Em tempo real
O tipo de jogos chamado "em tempo real" não dá aos jogadores a oportunidade de pausar e pensar sobre suas próximas ações. Esses jogos exigem do jogador máxima atenção e a capacidade de tomar decisões rapidamente. Em jogos solo, ainda haverá a possibilidade de pausar, mas nesse momento a tela é coberta por um menu. Às vezes, existem variantes de jogos em tempo real, onde o jogador pode organizar uma série de comandos para seu personagem ou unidades e edifícios, o que simplifica parcialmente a tarefa.
