For Whom the Bells Tolls is a story mission in Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2, where Henry must save the captain before his friend, Sir Ptacek, is hanged. We explain how to complete the quest in minimal time, where to find a lockpick, how to infiltrate the chapel, and save the captain along with Jan from death.
When you find yourself in the castle courtyard, you can see a groom on the left side. You can trade with him to acquire a lockpick, but first, you'll need to get some money. Players can also take a quest from this character. Of course, you can rummage through the pockets of guards standing far apart, but this is not the safest way.
Go through the gate and climb the wooden stairs in front of you. On the second floor, you'll meet the manager Ulrich. Do not interact with him yet, we will return to him later.
Pass by him and climb the stairs. There will be a door leading to the tower. Sometimes this area is patrolled by a guard, so be careful. Enter the door and follow left to another staircase. Climb to the third floor. In the large room, pay attention to the maid: she cleans this room, the floor above, and occasionally moves to another wing through the door to the left of the guard. We are interested in the office behind the door right in front of the stairs.
Now inspect all unlocked cabinets and chests. In some of them, you will find a little money. This amount will be enough to buy two lockpicks, although one will suffice.
As we mentioned earlier, you can also obtain money in other ways, such as through pickpocketing. It's all in your hands.
When you have the money, remember the place where the guard stands in front of the stairs, and go outside. Contact the groom and buy as many lockpicks as your money allows. If you don't want to save the captain and Jan immediately, you can take a quest from him to return the rosary. For this, you will need to beat the priest in dice (minimum bet 20 groschen). In the worst case, you can steal them.
With the lockpick in hand, we can head to the alchemy table and start brewing the fever potion. However, if you haven't climbed the tower and spoken with the captain's sister beforehand, there will be no markers on the map. Follow our hints.
There are two ways to reach the second tower with the alchemical table:
At the very top level, open the red door, then enter the room on the right. Here you will meet the girl you first saw at the lake. You can try to pass the available skill check — it won't affect anything. When she leaves, pick the easy lock on the chest and take all the herbs. On the bookshelf on the right side, pick up the healer's diary and read it in your inventory to get the corresponding recipe.
Interact with the table and perform the following actions:
If you did everything correctly, you will get the fever remedy, which needs to be given to Thomas for the quest. In any other case, upon completing the potion, Henry will say a line indicating your mistake.
We left this task for last for a reason. If you already have the fever remedy, you can skip the stealth segment that you would have undertaken to avoid being noticed by the guard in front of the stairs. Remember the place where we recommended finding groschen? Return here and simply run past the guard upstairs, then climb the stairs to the chapel and interact with the girl sitting next to the captain.
Yes, the guard will chase you, but he won't have time to do anything to you as a cutscene will trigger, completing the quest. After the mission ends, you will appear in the castle with a completely different status. So there's nothing to fear — just ignore the restrictions and head up to Thomas.
