Set in the world of Dungeons & Dragons, this isometric role-playing game sends a party of heroes into the snowbound lands of the Spine of the World. The player assembles a group of up to six characters and leads them through icy wilderness, fighting monsters, exploring ancient dungeons, and uncovering secrets buried beneath the snow.
In Icewind Dale: Enhanced Edition, the party can be tailored through its classes and kits, spells, and equipment. Combat takes place in real time with the option to pause, and the rules are based on the second edition of AD&D. The edition also includes restored quests and an updated interface with a quick-loot bar.

O jogador controla até seis personagens, criados do zero. A lista é bastante padrão para jogos de exploração de masmorras: humanos, elfos, anões, meio-orcs e representantes similares das raças de Faerûn. Os jogadores terão a oportunidade de gastar pontos de atributos e escolher uma classe de personagem.

A primeira parte não está repleta de diálogos ou missões secundárias; seu foco principal é o combate. Под управление игрока дается до 6 создаваемых с нуля персонажей. В списке довольно стандартный для "подземелий" набор — люди, эльфы, дварфы, полуорки и подобные представители рас Фейруна. Дадут раскидать очки параметров, выбрать класс персонажа.
А дальше — зимние просторы Долины ледяного ветра.
Первая часть не изобилует диалогами и сайд квестами, ее основное направление — бои. Кои проходят в реальном времени с активной паузой, включают в себя все необходимое, что бы не заскучать — мечи, топоры, копья и другое колюще-рубещее, огненные шары, кислотные туманы, магические щиты на любой вкус, удар из тени и ловушки в том числе.
