Fancy Skulls is a first-person shooter with procedurally generated levels and permadeath. Combat calls for tactical play, as enemies differ in both appearance and behavior. Some teleport when hit, while others leave homing bombs that can be shot back at them.
Weapons can be modified to change their properties and the way combat works, with options such as gaining ammunition while walking backwards or dealing extra damage with the last shots in a magazine. Usable items and power-ups also aid the player, including a friendly sentry, an eye that transmutes items, a kite that enables flight, and a matchbox that ignites nearby foes.
