Reddit suggested that the name directly refers to the Half-Life universe, since White Sands is a nature reserve in New Mexico. Let us recall that the fictional scientific complex «Black Mesa», the main setting of the first Half-Life, is also located there.
Insider Tyler McVicker, who has repeatedly reported correct information about Valve projects like Deadlock and Alyx, joined the discussion of the discovery. He suggested that Project White Sands could be Half-Life 3, since the game has been in development for several years and the main character wears a HEV suit, according to information from the code. According to the insider, the game is being developed for PC, not VR.
